CNNIC, China Internet e Network Information Center and CNCERT, ie China National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team has recently conducted a survey to approximately 4th 4% of Chinese online users have no security of applications loaded on their computers. According to the report, this percentage has increased from 3rd 9% in 2009. Given that the numbers are correct CNNIC is suggestive that goes back to the end of 2009, 384 million people were reportedly on the Internet in China. This means that the number of Internet users without an anti-virus was then almost 17 million. Furthermore, since 30% of Chinese are currently engaged in Internet browsing, these statistics show that there are no precise conditions for increasing growth in the coming years. More findings also stated the size of the security risks “in the Chinese Internet. For example, almost 50% of Chinese Internet users, holders of virtual goods, such as virtual currency in online gaming or the items used in social networking sites, found the survey. That these percentages, 14 . 6% said they were victims of theft when their access credentials kidnapping that resulted in loss of property. That is to say, had phishing or other types of Internet fraud or phishing cheated in one form or another. Interestingly, the study of Internet criminals more often during games attack on the network and try to harvest user credentials “that can fool the latter out large sums of dollars, sometimes. The report also notes that people invested in China 15th 3 million yuan (U.S. $ 2. 2 million dollars) in the “service charge” in 2009 for the treatment of the following cyber attacks. For anti-protection so-called “malware, the most popular download antivirus programs that are not rechargeable. These programs are harmful because they can lead to the download of malicious content on the computer of an end user or result in the kidnapping of your system with malware . Finally, we recommend that computer users have their Internet Security installed, defense and timely. They must also be skeptical of e-mail applications, plus Web sites that intend to access. Because this will help aluminum events that can be exploited by cyber-criminals’ or cause loss of freedom when using the Internet.

According Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer, F-Secure, recent cyber attacks by hackers in China against Google as well as other U. S. organizations are expected to increase two times or more during 2010 given the speed of attacks observed during January-February 2010 continues. PCWorld published this on March 7, 2010. F-Secure reported that the Chinese attacks against Google and others have been rising over the last couple of years, with about 1,968 such attacks taking place in 2008. This figure shot up to 2,195 in 2009, suggesting the sure rise in the volume of cyber assaults originating from China. The security firm added that there’ve been by now 895 cyber attacks originating from the country in 2010, which is greatly disturbing. Besides, Hypponen stated that the attacks were distinct from malware-based assaults since they attack particular organizations across the world. TECH. BLORGE published this on March 7, 2010. While attacks based on malware may normally target anyone, the Chinese attacks have been exclusive such as the Operation Aurora, which attacked Google in 2010. More assaults have struck advocates of human rights that seemingly happen every month. The assaults involve a spear phishing e-mail of professional nature that is sent to someone in the target organization. It carries a malicious program in its PDF attachment, which when opened exploits a PDF flaw to plant a Trojan. Reportedly, these e-mails include phishing messages in English or other European languages, appearing to have been written by native speakers of the particular language. Hypponen said that it was this trick that preyed on people effectively. He also said that a few infections have been running successfully for a long-term. In one such instance, a British military contractor’s laptop transmitted data to a Taiwan-based IP address, which remained undetected for 18 months. Moreover, despite all efforts to locate the attackers, no firm clues have been found to suggest that they are based in China. As speculated by some, there may be the involvement of the Chinese government, while some other believe that neighbors, like Romania, Russia and other eastern European nations, might be carrying out these attacks concealing their identities behind the massive network of China.

Mike Geide, Senior Security Researcher at Zscaler, has found that a Chinese government website has been recently infected. The infection is found similar to the one during an Internet assault, which reportedly drove Google to say that it’d stop operating on the Chinese Internet, as reported by USA TODAY on January 26, 2010. Geide became aware of the infection hitting ‘latax. gov. cn’ when he visited a forum that posted a report stating that users accessing the website could become infected with malware. The researcher also states that anyone following the government website containing tax payment related information will face the risk of receiving infection. A malware infiltrate into the visitor’s system through a newly found vulnerability in the Microsoft Web-browser – Internet Explorer. A backdoor component on the target computer will be created that will help the attacker to plant a program for activating the computer’s webcam and capturing sensitive data without leaving a clue, Geide explains. The original malware threat existed in the indexing page of the website. For executing the attack, a popular crime-ware kit of do-it-yourself type called ‘Hupigon’ was used. The security researchers state that upon installation, ‘Hupigon’ can present different utilities to the attackers. A rootkit feature in Hupigon makes its detection especially difficult. Moreover, Hupigon’s menu-driven controls come in Chinese language and the place for the kit’s trading is also the Chinese language forums. These apparently suggest that it is the Chinese individuals themselves who were responsible for infecting www. latax. gov. cn. Geide also wrote in a blog posting that it was just one instance where zero-day vulnerability in IE affected gov. cn websites; he had observed other similar reports as well, as reported by Zscaler on January 25, 2010. According to the researcher, the question that arises is whether these attacks are designed to potentially monitor ‘citizens’ activities, or whether hackers have infiltrated the gov. cn sites. Whatever the case may be, users are recommended that they do safe browsing, while those using IE 6 should upgrade or switch to another browser, he added.
